Robert M. Glickman, M.D., Dean and CEO of NYU Medical Center Applauds Decision on VA Hospitals
New York, NY, August 11, 2006 – Dean Robert M. Glickman and the NYU Medical Center community applaud the Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs for the decision to preserve the mission and structure of the Manhattan VA Hospital. This recognition of the quality of, and need for, its tertiary services is of particular significance because it gives veterans in this part of the country continued access to state-of-the art care in a broad range of specialties.
The level of healthcare expertise available to veterans at the Manhattan VA is a direct reflection of the deep, 50-year relationship between the two institutions. Through this relationship, the Hospital’s six VA-designated Centers of Excellence – cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, HIV/AIDS and kidney dialysis – which have no equivalent within 100 miles – were jointly developed. Veterans of the entire Northeast who have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan are referred to rehabilitation services (Preservation and Amputation Care (PACT) and Prosthetic Treatment Center) also jointly developed by the Manhattan VA and NYU School of Medicine.
"I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues at SUNY Downstate and at the Manhattan and Brooklyn VA Hospitals who, together with NYU School of Medicine, have worked to consolidate the VA services wherever possible," commented Dean Glickman. "We will continue to pursue these strategies energetically."
"Today’s positive outcome also reflects the efforts of public officials at many levels of government, whom I thank most sincerely for their support: Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton; Manhattan Members of Congress Carolyn Maloney, Charles Rangel, and Jerold Nadler; Long Island Congressman Peter King; Mayor Michael Bloomberg; and other state and local officials who supported this effort."
