ALLURE MAGAZINE UNVEILS MOST ALLURING BODIES, A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION AND SILENT AUCTION BENEFITTING NYU’S INTERDISCIPLINARY MELANOMA COOPERATIVE GROUP

Charity Photography Exhibit Features Portraits of Scarlett Johansson
and Marilyn Monroe

New York, May 7, 2008 - Allure Magazine hosted the 2nd Annual ‘Most Alluring Bodies’ Exhibit at Skylight in Manhattan on May 7, 2008.  Allure brought together Manhattan’s best and brightest for a photography exhibition and silent auction to benefit NYU’s Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group and kick off Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

An outstanding group of photographers have come together with Allure to make a bold statement about the importance of skin cancer awareness. The exhibit featured tasteful nude portraits graciously donated by the world’s top photographers, including Annie Leibovitz, Michael Thompson, Steven Klein, Bert Stern, Reed Krakoff and Eve Arnold. The portraits all focus on the female form, and included such celebrated subjects as Marilyn Monroe, Scarlett Johansson, Giselle Bundchen and Kate Moss.

Dr. William Carroll, director of the NYU Cancer Institute, “We are grateful to Allure magazine for dedicating their efforts to such an important cause. We know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in America, and these funds will help further our efforts to treat and investigate melanoma and other skin cancers.”

“The Most Alluring Bodies benefit auction gives us the chance to raise money for research as well as raise awareness about skin cancer through photographs of the female form,” said editor in chief Linda Wells, who hosted the event.

About the IMCG
The New York University Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group (IMCG) was created in 2002 as an NYU Cancer Institute multidisciplinary melanoma research program. The IMCG consists of 14 investigators, representing 11 departments of the NYU School of Medicine.  Its core mission is to utilize the cohesive and unique interdisciplinary nature of its members to: 1) identify risk factors of melanoma progression; 2) evaluate the biologic heterogeneity of melanoma; and 3) establish combination approaches for treating melanoma that integrate immunotherapeutic (vaccine), chemotherapeutic and biological therapies. These common scientific interests and goals serve to foster vigorous interactions and collaborations between members of the IMCG. These unique strengths of the IMCG program are built on the foundation of NYU’s world-class faculty of clinicians and researchers and its strong, established reputation as a premier tertiary referral center for melanoma patients. Their continued collaborations and prolific research efforts unite them at the frontline in the fight against melanoma.

The IMCG recently initiated a competitive peer-reviewed process of evaluating melanoma projects within NYU to fund developmental grants that have great promise in improving melanoma clinical care.  Ultimately, five projects were selected, with topics of study ranging from creating a preclinical model for testing new treatment for melanoma brain metastases, to examining new genetic targets for predicting risk of developing melanoma, and to developing immunotherapy (vaccine) treatment approaches. In a relatively short period of time, the IMCG researchers have generated over 100 publications.

Ultimately, this focused research will help identify and develop novel treatment modalities for the treatment and hopefully a potential cure for melanoma.
