Contemporary Concepts in Clinical Emergency Medicine: A Literature-Based Approach

Course Description:

This 3-day offering, now in its 24th year, will highlight common, current management controversies using a literature-based approach to provide support for rational clinical decision-making. Each session will include four defined didactic presentations followed by a fifth topic in contemporary format. The format is designed to stimulate discussion and active debate.

Intended Audience:

This course is intended for physicians, nurses, and advanced practice professionals currently working in the field of emergency medicine or family practice.

Educational Objectives:

This seminar encompasses the spectrum of disease represented by emergency medicine. A diverse selection of scenario-based topics will be discussed using an evidence-based approach. The registrants will be afforded well-researched presentations and the ability to discuss and debate current clinical perspectives, management options, and treatment protocols. At the end of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Debate controversies in management regimens, citing current literature to support a position
  • Identify five major health care problems regularly managed by emergency practitioners
  • List signs and symptoms of each problem and note life-threatening complications
  • State the emergency intervention necessary for immediate resuscitation of these problems
  • Recognize the procedures and/or tests necessary to establish a differential diagnosis
