Improving a Great Technique NYU's Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery maintains the nation's largest clinical academic and research center in the field. "We have some of the most talented people in the world right here," Dr. McCarthy says. "Whatever specific part of the face needs repair - whether it's the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, bones, blood vessels, or nerves - we have a world-class expert in each area, who can achieve the best possible result. We also have an excellent program to address patients' developmental and psychological needs." At present, most distraction
devices are applied on the outside of the face, which can result in post-treatment
scarring. "The next generation distraction devices will be miniaturized,
allowing us to place the device within the mouth," Dr. McCarthy adds.
"Current research is also focusing on the development of devices that
can direct Today, Emily's life is much like that of any 4 year old. She attends nursery school where she learns, laughs, and plays. It's been a long, hard road for the Munsons, and Emily still has a long way to go. "She's very confident, bright, and full of life," says Barbara. "I know Emily will continue needing speech therapy and further surgery, but she's come so far. The doctors have done so much. I couldn't be more grateful."
