Dance
Clinic
The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries conducts dance injury clinics
each week where dancer's injuries are evaluated and treated by
a specially trained team of orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists and/or athletic trainers.
Services are provided to dancers on a sliding fee scale according
to income. No dancer is turned away due to financial hardship.
In keeping with NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases'
role as a teaching institution, the dance clinic serves as a training
site for orthopaedic Residents and Fellows in the Sports Medicine
and Foot & Ankle Services. Residents and Fellows co-evaluate
each dancer patient under the guidance of the senior staff. As
a result, physicians learn about the unique injuries incurred
by dancers and the special skills needed to properly evaluate and
treat them.
Physical therapists and athletic trainers also interact
with the dancers during and after the dance clinic evaluation to
answer questions about their injury and to address strategies for
healing and prevention. The therapists plan a treatment course with
the physician for each dancer to include home exercise activities,
training modifications, padding, taping or bracing and referrals
for dietary or psychological services.
Dance Clinic Forms
Radiology
Dancers seen in the Harkness dance clinic are often referred for x-rays,
MRI's and bone scans. A
special relationship between the dance clinic and NYUHJD's
Department of Radiology has been forged so that dancers coming from
off-site physical therapy centers can schedule radiological procedures
on the same day as their follow-up visit to the clinic.
Ambulatory Surgery
Approximately two percent of all dance injuries seen in our clinic result
in surgical management. Most
surgeries involve same day surgery or require one overnight stay. The Harkness Center’s Administrative Office provides
patients assistance in obtaining medical clearance, scheduling pre-admission
testing as well as financial counseling to patients undergoing surgical
procedures.
Immediate Care
The Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center at NYU Hospital for Joint
Diseases services dancers with urgent or emergent orthopaedic problems.
The center is open 8 am to 10:30 pm, 7 days a week. The Immediate
Care Center treats only musculoskeletal problems, and, as such,
can spare dancers the long wait typical at a general hospital emergency
room.
